Wonder-weapon trap
The Battle of Stalingrad changed the course of WWII. German generals understood it but failed to fire Hitler.
The technological juggernaut Germany had many trumps up its sleeve. Adolf Hitler played them poorly and stepped into the Wunderwaffe trap.
On the one hand, as late as 1943 (sic!), he fully militarized industry; on the other, he appointed architect Albert Speer as the minister of ammunitions. Megalomaniac urbanist Speer launched many projects of wonder weapons to win the war.
German industry eagerly complied; german engineers preferred drawing boards and laboratories to fighting on the fronts.
The strategic priorities Albert Speer missed:
a) cut the sea supply lines between USA and Allies by high-speed diesel-electrical submarines. Consequently, neither Landlease nor D-Day & Overlord in June 1944 couldn’t take place;
b) protect Germany from bombardments with radars and anti-aircraft rockets;
Instead, a tactical effort took place, the potential used for new “toys.” The wonder weapons trap was shut.
Albert Speer was rewarded by the Nuremberg Tribunal for his effort to disperse german technological potential, and he spent 20 years in Spandau jail. Methinks, the USA & USSR owe him medals.
However, the 1943-1945 years of research by german engineers were used by the USA and USSR. German know-how and prototypes served to produce fighter jets, rockets, submarines, and A & H-bombs.
Talented American, Russian and German engineers developed arms of MAD that assured world peace starting in 1945.
